The Jaguar E Type is one of the defining sports cars of the 1960s. When it was introduced in 1961, it set new standards in both design and engineering and remained highly competitive throughout its production life. By the late 1960s, evolving safety and emissions regulations, particularly for the important US market, led Jaguar to further develop the model into what became the Series 2. Introduced in 1968, the Series 2 retained the same fundamental chassis and mechanical layout, while benefiting from a number of practical updates. These included revised open headlights without aerodynamic covers, full-width bumpers, improved lighting, and a larger front air intake to enhance cooling. Beneath these changes, it remained the same advanced car, featuring monocoque construction, fully independent suspension, disc brakes all round, and rack-and-pinion steering.
This particular car is a 1971 Jaguar E Type Series 2 Roadster, fitted with the desirable 4.2 litre inline six XK engine. It was delivered new in Birmingham to its first owner, Mr A.W. Knight, and retains its matching numbers engine, as confirmed by the accompanying Jaguar Heritage Certificate. The 4.2 engine is a significant advantage. Compared to the earlier 3.8, it delivers more torque at lower engine speeds, making the car smoother, more flexible, and easier to drive. Combined with the fully synchronised gearbox and the Series 2 cooling improvements, this results in a car that is notably more usable and reliable in modern traffic, while fully retaining the classic E Type character. The car presents in very nice condition and is finished in an elegant metallic green, a colour that suits the E Type’s lines exceptionally well. A comprehensive history file accompanies the car, including invoices and period documentation, all carefully preserved. In addition, a Certificate of Title and the Jaguar Heritage Certificate confirm it’s matching numbers.
On the road, the Series 2 delivers exactly what it promises: a refined yet engaging driving experience, with excellent ride quality, precise steering, and the unmistakable sound and smoothness of the XK six-cylinder engine. A matching numbers Jaguar E Type Series 2 4.2 Roadster, correctly documented, mechanically desirable, and genuinely usable. A strong and honest example of one of the most important sports cars ever built
