The Volvo 164 is a luxury car based on Volvo's 140 series.
The idea of introducing a slightly larger, more exclusive model had been around for some time at Volvo. However, the introduction of the 140 series in 1966 gave rise to the idea of fitting an in-line six-cylinder engine into the newly designed body. Chief Designer Jan Wilsgaard used the chassis of the new 140 series and combined it with the front of Project 358 from the 1950s. Wilsgaard lengthened the chassis of the 140 by ten centimetres, giving the car a longer nose. This was necessary to accommodate the newly developed six-cylinder in-line engine. It had the type number B30, a capacity of three litres and an output of 107 kW (145 hp) thanks to the installation of two Zenith-Stromberg carburetors.
The Volvo 164 was much more luxuriously equipped than the 140, with thick wool upholstery on the seats, fabric floor coverings and a rear seat shaped for two people, with a folding armrest in the middle. After the first year of production, the 164 was equipped as standard with leather interior upholstery, headrests and integrated halogen spotlights.
Collection by Vermant is proud to be able to offer you this beautiful Volvo 164. It was delivered new on 17-04-1970 by the British Volvo dealer Seymour Horwell Garages in Newton Abbot to Mr. Hawthorne. Since March 1997 he was first registered in the Netherlands and now has German papers. All the while, the car was maniacally maintained. Remarkable is the perfect, rust-free condition of the visibly repeated tectyled bodywork. Paintwork measured all around shows very thin values between 100 and a maximum of 400Mu.
This Volvo 164 has recently undergone a technical overhaul. Engine and the automatic gearbox were removed and as well as the rear axle which received new seals. The drive shaft, starter, alternator and brake system were completely overhauled. New Michelin XZX tyres have been fitted, while the radiator, wheel bearings and rear shock absorbers have been replaced. This 164 has a fully documented history, original sales brochures, numerous maintenance invoices, original service booklet, inspection reports from both England and the Netherlands are present.
In short, this Volvo 164 is a reliable and rust-free car in a beautiful color combination. In addition, it is equipped with the coveted sunroof, power steering and automatic transmission. Probably one of the best on the market
